Chutney
sat on her haunches, neck craned high in tense concentration.
The moon hung low in the twilight, suspended from muted surroundings.
Chutney growled softly, daring the moon to move. At the height
of her concentration, a white barn owl flew out of the moon
and swooped just above her head. All three dogs went berserk.
They chased the moon creature into the orchard and howled
to shatter the still evening air. Upon return, they showed
pride in their duty as protectors of the night. Chutney sat
back on the deck and riveted her eyes to the moon. Alerted
through adrenaline, Bosco lifted his head to see the intruder,
and with a quick glance at Chutney, he rocketed to the fence
with the other two in raucous pursuit. The moon hid behind
tall trees deceiving the dogs to bravado. Once more by the
deck, Loca spotted the menace, at first curious by the moon's
stillness, then emboldened by such weakness. She sounded the
final call to battle and the dogs raged on hind legs, stretching
skyward until a darkened cloud extinguished the threat.
