"You're
gonna let your dogs live in the house?!" cried a number
of new acquaintances. In Hawaii, many people stake their dogs
along the periphery, figuring the comfortable year round climate
relegates dog hairs and fleas to a sentry position, no more.
Our dogs spent nine months in a dog house and hog wire pen
during construction of our home, but every day they played
on new plywood platforms, squeezed between stud walls, and
knocked their tails on each joist as they chased under the
house. We balanced on ladders with heavy metal nail guns while
the dogs rumbled up and down the new staircase, jockeying
for position. They made us laugh during the most tedious times
of house building with their games of hide and seek behind
newly erected walls. How could we possibly shut the door on
them once the house was finished? As far as they were concerned,
this became their new, improved dog house.
