Painted as a tribute to Pele, goddess of the volcano; Lilinoe, goddess of the mists; and Poliahu, goddess of the snows, this scene depicts the summit of Mauna Kea with the Saddle and distant Mauna Loa in the light of a rising Moon. In the sky, the stars Alpha and Beta Centaurus point to the Southern Cross.
