The Artist - Main Page

"In my dreams I am on a mountain, and the mountain is me. It is my whole life, it is my whole world." Journal entry, 1988.

When I was a boy, I was always fascinated by the earth and sky. I would read maps as though they were books and, when I could, I loved to sit outside under the tropical night skies of my native Trinidad in the Caribbean.

I was drawn at first to the sciences as a natural extension of my interests, and the way my mind worked. As I grew older, however, I found myself drawn more and more toward the arts. Whereas science satisfied my intellect, art addressed the feelings in my heart.

As a child and a young adult, I never really believed I could draw or paint, I thought this was some kind of gift passed down whole at birth to the lucky few. However, in allowing myself to follow a path that led increasingly toward art, I found that the ‘ability’ to draw and paint had simply lain dormant inside me, like a volcano ready to come to life. All it needed was time and nurturing. It is, quite simply, the ability to feel, and to act on those feelings. No more, no less.

As an artist, I bring together elements from a range of disciplines - art, science and the humanities - into my work. My paintings and drawings are a way of fusing these interests into a single overall expression of the world around us, and our place within it. The recurring theme of the "Volcano and the Night Sky" has long been a favorite subject for this endeavor.
It represents a place where the physical body, the earth, reaches up into the realm of the abstract spirit, the sky. It is the point at which the one becomes the other.

Dominic Tidmarsh was born in 1964 on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. From his early fascination with the Earth and the Sky, he developed an artistic style that draws from, and brings together, both Art and Science. A high school music scholar in England, he went on to attend the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport Maine, then the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, graduating in 1988. Now a resident of the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Dominic’s work is easily recognized for its depictions of the Land and the Skies of Hawai‘i.
